New year, new resolution, new me. The beginning of the year is a perfect time to start with some hew habits. Everyone starts with a gym, healthy food, finding a new job. However, to organize your life, you should organize your space for a start. Clutter is a consequence of living in one place for a longer time, and you probably have a lot of surplus things in your house you should throw away right now.

Have a good plan

First of all, look around you. There are undoubtedly many items in your house you need, but you probably have much, much more.

  • Furniture – Sofas, tables, chairs, beds, shelves. Of course, you need these pieces, but there are some exceptions.
  • Electronics – We all find it hard to live without electronics, but every house has some cluttered stuff in this category.
  • Clothes – This is often the most cluttered space in a home.
  • Kitchen items – Every kitchen has a collection of unused stuff.
  • Cleaning products, makeup, and cosmetics – You can definitely have too many of these, and some may be expired.
  • Little things – You probably have many trinkets in your home that you don’t really need.

Check your stuff and ask yourself two questions: Do I need this? and What for? After this, make a checklist with two columns. One is for the things you are sure you don’t need, and the other is for everything you think might come in handy someday. You can also help yourself and hire a professional organizer instead. With them, you’ll be done with this in no time, without a fuss.

Things you should throw away right now

In most cases, we are not aware of the number of things we have in our homes. With some, you can barely remember why you needed them. Among these, there are items you should throw away immediately.

Old furniture

These are the signs your pieces are becoming outdated:

  • You can see a nail breaking through.
  • The board is broken.
  • The polish is peeling off.
  • It’s starting to crack and become unsafe.
  • The fabric is torn and colorless.

However, keep in mind that some things can be fixed. It is nice to return some of the old shine to the pieces, and after you repair them, you can save them for your new home or your kids. Just be mindful of where you store such furniture, especially if it is wooden. When selecting a storage space, consider the most important factors, such as whether it is climate-controlled. It will ensure that your pieces stay in good shape for years to come.

Electronics

If you open your drawer, you will find old chargers, cables, old and broken CD players, and outdated gadgets. You probably also have old cellphones, and if you don’t use them, it’s time to get rid of them. However, don’t just throw them in the garbage; inquire about the smart disposal of these things.

Be realistic about the clothes

Every closet has old shirts and torn jeans inside, that one glove without the other, a sock with a hole, and old underwear without the elastic. It would be a good idea to organize your closet and set aside anything you don’t wear anymore. If you have no one to give it to or nowhere to donate it, then fling it.

Kitchen – your storage

Go through your kitchen appliances and dispose of all your old and broken coffee machines, mixers, blenders, etc. If you haven’t called a repairman by now, you don’t need that item that much. Also, unless they carry sentimental value, throw away all of your broken and cracked cups and glasses.

You should not forget about the expired food and look at the expiration dates on your cleaning products. Some things could be toxic after the expiration date. You can provoke skin irritation or poisoning with some of them, so be careful with this.

Personal stuff

You probably have that one earring, broken hair elastic, old toothbrush, old catalogs, and newspapers, empty boxes. You also likely have post-cards, expired vouchers, old invitations, and business cards in your junk drawers or around the home. These are things in your house you should throw away right now.

“Maybe I need this”

At the end of this process, you’ll have a pile of things you don’t want to get rid of. You are not sure what to do with them, and that’s OK. You can solve this problem by making a memory box and labeling each item with the memory connected to it. That way, you can look back and enjoy those happy times without cluttering your home.

We hope that our list has helped you find the things in your house you should throw away right now. Although we are not saying you should get rid of everything, cleaning and organizing will help you feel better in your home and allow you to breathe more easily. Best of all, you will likely cut your cleaning time by a few hours. Best of luck!
