The Lost Hour Blues
Here we are again! It happens once a year. We Spring Forward…but with that spring comes a time adjustment. I once knew a young man with an unfortunately timed March birthday who jokingly lamented that his birthday had fallen on the only day of the year with only 23 hours.
Luckily for most of us, it’s just another day, albeit one that can tire us out. We can’t recover that hour for you but we can help you use the time you do have more wisely with some simple organization tips!
Organization is all about productivity enhancement which in turn is all about life improvement.
A Favor for the Future You
As a lot of us can start to feel groggy as we adjust to a new sleep schedule, one favor you can do for yourself is to prepare for the morning the night before when you may feel a little more alert.
- Lay your clothes (socks, shoes, shirt, everything!) out for yourself the night before so you just have to put them in
- Pre make your breakfast so you can grab and go
- Have everything you need for your workday ready for you so you only need to show up
- Bonus: Have your car already facing the direction you need it to be heading so you can just pull out and head to your destination.
Location, Location, Location
How much time to you spend looking for the same items each week? We all have something: your keys, your phone, your purse, your wallet.
What if you could get that time back? The answer is simple: Parking spaces. I know a successful business man who swears by keeping everything in a “parking space.” He always puts his phone, his glasses and everything else in the same spot its parking space.
Don’t Forget to Declutter
Declutter is a word that gets thrown around a lot – especially by those of us who are interested in organizing. But remember, decluttering isn’t just getting rid of things, it’s removing that which you do not need. If you simplify, you save time.
Now we could spend several blog posts just talking about decluttering – and we will 🙂 but for today keep these few tips in mind.
- Start Small
- Don’t let the tail wag the dog. Organization is supposed to make your life better, not more stressful.
- Place items in places that make organizational sense. Keep items near where you will need them when possible.
- Remember Parking Spaces.
- Keep your mind decluttered too
- There’s a great saying I’ve heard a few different ways that goes something like this, “Don’t let anyone into your head that you wouldn’t let into your home.” In other words, try not led your mind circle negative people or thought patterns. If you don’t have an answer to a problem, put it down and do something that relaxes you! If the problem is still there tomorrow, you’ll be better equipped to solve it. If not, you’ll be glad you didn’t waste anymore time on it!
Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help
Finally, remember it’s ok to get assistance.
As Ann says, you can do anything but you can’t do everything!
Sometimes work is just better with company so don’t be afraid to ask those you love for a hand. You’d do the same for them, right?
And you can always hire a professional organizer. Wow Organizing serves Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee but if you’re not in our service area, you can always find your own friendly neighborhood organizing professional.
Until we meet again, let us know in the comments what subjects from the post you’d like to learn more about. Also, do you have any time saving tips you’d like to share?
